Academic standards list

Grade 6 — Tennessee Physical Education Standards


Academic standards define the expectations for knowledge and skills that students are to learn in a subject by a certain age or at the end of a school grade level. This page contains a list of standards for a specific content area, grade level, and/or course. The list of standards may be structured using categories and sub-categories.

Motor Skills

Motor Skills
      Invasion Games/Throwing
Using a mature overhand pattern, throws at targets of varying distance.
      Invasion Games/Catching
Using a mature pattern, catches at different levels and extensions.
Passes/receives with hands/feet/implement while traveling (partner activity).
      Invasion Games/Passing and Receiving
Passes and receives utilizing various pathways (partner activity).
      Invasion Games/Offensive Skills
Performs offensive skills (pivots, fakes, change of direction, and give and go) to create open space without defensive pressure.
      Invasion Games/Sports- Ball Control
Demonstrates a dominant side (hand or foot) dribble while changing directions.
      Invasion Games/Sports- Ball Control
Dribbles and passes a ball with foot or implement using both inside and outside of foot or implement.
      Invasion Games/Sports- Shooting on Goal
Shoots on goal with appropriate force and accuracy.
      Invasion Games/Sports- Defensive Skills
Demonstrates defensive ready position, with weight on balls of feet, arms extended, palms up and eyes on abdomen.
      Games/Sports- Serving (Net/Wall)
Performs a serve (underhand/overhand) with control for net/wall games.
      Games/Sports- Striking (Net/Wall)
Strikes with an overhand pattern with appropriate distance and force during various practice tasks.
      Games/Sports- Forehand/ Backhand
Demonstrates proper technique using a short or long handled implement to complete a forehand and backhand stroke.
      Net/Wall Games/Sports- Volley
Executes a forearm volley using a mature pattern.
      Game/Sports- Target (Striking)
Strikes a stationary object with an implement for accuracy (e.g., Croquet, shuffle board, golf).
      Games/Sports- Field (Strike)
Strikes a pitched ball with an implement.
      Games/Sports- Field (Fielding)
Catch (field) an object using a mature pattern.
      Fitness (types of activities)
Participates in a variety of aerobic fitness activities (step aerobics, jump rope, cardio kick boxing, aerobic dance).
      Fitness (intensity)
Participates in moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity.
      Fitness (flexibility)
Uses correct techniques for static stretching to improve flexibility.
Rhythm, Dance, & Educational Gymnastics
      Rhythms & Dance
Demonstrates proper sequence of a dance with at least 32 counts.
Moves in time to the beat of music of different tempos.
      Educational Gymnastics
Demonstrates a prescribed educational gymnastics routine with at least 3 elements.
Aquatics (Optional)
Demonstrates basic water adjustment skill (submerge, hold breath, and exhale while submerged).
Outdoor Pursuits (Optional)
      Outdoor Pursuits
Demonstrates correct technique for basic skills in 1 selected outdoor activity (e.g., Rock Climbing, Orienteering, Hiking, Biking, Ropes Course).

Successfully transitions quickly from offense to defense or defense to offense.

Identifies appropriate position for anticipated shot.
      Games/Sports- Shot Selection
Identifies the appropriate club or shot needed based on the opponent's position or angle/distance of target.
      Games/Sports- Offensive Strategies
Explains intended location of the shot (shot on goal).
Outdoor Pursuits (Optional)
      Outdoor Pursuits- Movement Concepts
Identifies and makes appropriate decision based on skill level and conditions.

Identifies the 6 skill related fitness components (agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed).
Defines resting heart rate and calculate target heart rate zone.
Identifies the FITT Principle (Frequency, Intensity, Type, Time).
Identifies upper and lower body muscle groups.

Completes a 2 week activity log and compare results to a formal fitness test.

Willingly includes others of a diverse population.

Communicates ideas and feelings towards physical activity.
Recognizes individual challenges and performs positive coping strategies.
