Applications of Triangles: No Nerd Here

This is one lesson plan in a larger Unit Plan on triangular relationships.  It has proofs, real world problems, constructions, a unit project, assessments, and more.  In Lesson 11, “No Nerd Here”, students explain (or justify) the use of triangle properties in the building of a tree house through either a letter, Power Point presentation, e-mail or a simple report.  A list of properties and vocabulary to be used is included.  Resource also includes a grading rubric.  The entire unit plan can be found hereThis is a portion of a Unit Project, however, it could be used as a stand alone assignment as well. The lesson includes the possibility of doing the assignment in small groups to help with differential instruction.

Standards & Objectives

Essential and guiding questions:

From Lesson 9:

  • What properties of sides and angles of triangles are used in everyday situations?
  • Why should we study Triangle Sum Theorem, Triangle Inequality Theorem and Exterior Angle Theorem for Triangles?

From Lesson 10:

  • How can we use relationships found from angle bisectors, altitudes, medians, perpendicular bisectors in triangles?
