Sound Tutorial

This tutorial provides a very simply worded and carefully outlined overview of the principles of sound, complete with entertaining and appealing simulations. Not only that, sounds are produced during the course of the tutorial to audibly demonstrate the content covered, which includes sound production, the dependence of the speed of sound on its medium, and the Doppler Effect. Questions at the beginning of the various sections of the tutorial can be used to focus student interaction with the tutorial. A section on the use of sound in materials testing is included at the end of the tutorial as a real world connection. The characteristics of sound, including, speed, pitch, and intensity, are presented at an approachable level for high school students in the ninth grade or above. Reflection, refraction, and the Doppler Effect are presented in as understandable a format as possible. The structure of the human ear and its role in detecting sound is presented. Because sounds are played during the course of the tutorial, it is particularly effective in conveying the principles behind the physical production and the characteristics of sound.
