Surface Area and Volume

An introduction to the concepts of surface area and volume.  At the end of the lesson, students will be familiar with both concepts and discover the relationship between surface area and volume through interactive manipulation of prisms. This lesson simply introduces students an interactive way to surface area and volume.  While it doesn't directly present or have students work with the functions, it does prompt students to find a pattern in the relationship between calculating the surface area and volume of three-dimensional prisms and their findings can lead to other lessons and activities that work directly with the functions.

Standards & Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will:

  • have been introduced to the notion of surface area and volume.
  • have learned the terminology used with surface area and volume.
  • have experimented with the surface area and volume of different prisms.
