Part of "The Speech Analysis Series," this web page contains links to 13 video clips of notable speeches, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s classic "I Have a Dream" and 10-year-old Dalton Sherman's "Do You Believe?" In addition to the videos, the website contains in-depth critiques of all 13 speeches.
This resource is designed to help students understand the difference between a summary and a critique, focusing especially on the latter. The teacher might show one of the video clips, asking students to summarize the speech and then to share their summaries. If judgments or other critical remarks are found within a summary, the teacher could use this to transition to the concept of a critique. The teacher could walk the students to the critique that accompanies the video, noting critical remarks that evaluate the speech. Note: Because the videos are embedded on the web page, the Youtube source should not cause a block by any district filters since it will not directly link to youtube.com.
