Liquid Layers
This is an awesome, relatively simple experiment to illustrate how liquids can have different densities. Using four liquids (water, alcohol, glycerin, and salt water) that are dyed with food coloring, students are asked to "stack" the liquids so that you can see each layer in a clear straw. An alternative to the clear straw could be plastic beakers. The experiment also offers a few follow-up/critical thinking questions to accompany the experiment.
In this experiment, the densities of different types of mixtures are examined. Students will learn which liquids are more or less dense by trying to layer them without mixing them together. The experiment itself allows the opportunity to use the scientific method for discovery.
