Genre Studies: Informational Texts Unit Plan

This is a three lesson unit used to teach informational text. The three lessons are: New Information, Pictures and Photographs, and Labeled Diagrams. Teacher introduces the genre of informational text. Students respond by writing and drawing.  Teacher uses guided instruction and think alouds to explain how we can learn from photographs and drawings in informational text. Students respond on a class chart during guided practice and respond by drawing and writing during independent practice. Lesson 1 suggests using the book Giant Pandas by Gail Gibbons. Lesson 2 suggests using the book All About Cats and Kittens by Emily Neye, however, another infomational book could be substituted.  Lesson 3 suggests using the book Bats by Gail Gibbons.
