Persuasive Writing

The topic of pets is a high-interest subject for students. Using a model from literature is an effective strategy to teach persuasive writing. Students can relate to wanting a pet and trying to persuade parents. Letter writing skills will need to precede this lesson.

TASK ASSIGNMENT

After reading excerpts of the books Charlotte’s Web and Because of Winn Dixie and discussing characteristics of a persuasive essay, students write a persuasive letter to their parents in an attempt to persuade them that they should be allowed to have a pet.
